CARGO:

192 quintales de palo de Brasilete, from Cristobal de Aranda for

himself or whoever he delegates to represent him in Spain.

Note: This ship is a French "Fragata" named EI Ciervo (sometimes

spelled El Siervo, El Sierbo, or El Cierbo) captured by Echeverz

Squadron off the coast of Portobelo, caught will goods and

merchandise and brought to Cartagena, where it was confiscated

for smugglling. It was auctioned at 4,125 pesos to Echeverz (who

was probably due part of the money, having made the prize, while

the rest was due the crown). Echeverz claimed he had the right

to incorporate ships into his Squadron, and he appoints Salvador

Cast an as maestre, captain and administrator for the return

voyage. The officials in Cartagena admit he has this right but

fear the other ships will go short of crews, since he is also

taking another balandra or fragata in addition to his original

Squadron. They say he must either obtain additional crew locally

(i.e., not from his original ships) or they will not give him

permission to these two prize ships with him.

They rename the ship Nuestra Senora del Carmen, though it

continues to be called EI Ciervo. Pedro Umaran is appointed

Contramaestre.

July 1714, Cartagena: Registro que se saco en el puerto do

Cartagena para balandra San Miguel del

cargo de Don Antonio de Cherbers (sic). (9

1/2 ff.1 copy of original made in 1716).

No cargo is listed; probably went in ballast. (Most doubtful, JH)

Echeverz captured this balandra from the English off the coast of

Portobelo and brought it under register from Portobelo to

Cartagena. He requests permission to take it back to Cadiz with

his original three ships and two fragatas he has captured (thus

Echeverz is taking back six ships to Havana altogether). He

appoints Miguel de Bonasategui as maestre, capitan, y

administrador. The full name of the ship is the San Miguel de

Excelsis. The pilot is Miguel de Tansida; Contramaestre, Joseph

Gonzales, plus 11  other officers and crew. (This could be the

ship, sent by Echeverz from Havana to Veracruz and then sold to

Ubilla in Havana).

July 1714, Cartagena: Registro que se saco del puerto de

Cartagena para el de Cadiz con escala en

La Havana para la fragata" nombrado La

Galera ….de Cherbers (sic). (9 ff.; copy

of original made in 1716) .

CARGO: (La Galera de Echeverz)

No cargo listed; probably went in ballast. Didn't.. JH).

This ship was the Dutch fragata that Echeverz Squadron captured

off the coast of Tolu+ (sic), presumably engaged in the

contraband trade and brought to Cartagena where it was

confiscated and auctioned to Echeverz for 2,000 pesos. The full

name of the ship is now Nuestra Senora de la Papa, alias La

Galera with Juan Baptista Zaleme as captain, master and

administrator. The pilot was Mateo Bernardo; Contramaestre,

Pedro Echeguia, plus 15 additional officers and crew.

No cargo listed: probably went in ballast.  (No, JH).

+Tolu is a small town about 10 or 12 miles south of Islas del

Rosario or Baru peninsula off Columbia, JH.

27 August 1714, Cartagena: Receipt signed by Antonio de Echeverz

y Subiza, Caballero de la Orden de

                                       Calatrava.

Echeverz, who is sailing on the Capitana Nuestra Senora del

Carmen, San Miguel, y San Antonio, has received from the Treasury

Officials of Cartagena for the King;

30,729 pesos 6 reales,(probably in coin, possibly gold-JH)

castellanos 2 tomines.

These items were received by the Treasury Officials in Cartagena

on 9 June 1713, sent by Treasury Officials of Antioquia, and are

being loaded on the Capitana. The package they came in says that

the one barreta weighs 506 castellanos, but the Treasury

Officials in Cartagena checked it and found it only weighed 503

castellanos 6 tomines.

27 August 1714, Cartagena: Receipt signed by Antonio Echeverz ..

In addition to the 30, 729 pesos 6 reales and the 308 castellanos

7 tomines 6 granos of gold dust, Echeverz received from the Royal

Officials 11,180 pesos 6 reales sent from Santa Fe de Bogota and

received the Cartagena Treasury Officials on 20 July 1714.

7,453 pesos 6 reales of this amount being shipped on the Capitana

3,767 pesos On the Almiranta named Nuestra Senora del Rosario..

Captain de mar y guerra Don Pedro de Echeverz y Gonzales;

maestre Don Manuel Alvarez.

(The two portions add up to more than the 11,180 pesos but this

is typical Spanish Colonial arithmetic) (?-JH)

In addition to these amounts Echeverz has received 34,915 pesos

10 maravedis. Echeverz contract with the crown stipulates that

all treasure sent to the King must be divided between the

Capitana, which is to get 2/3rds, and Almiranta, which is to get

the remaining one third. Thus, of the 34,915 pesos 10 maravedis;

23,276 went to the Capitana and 11,639 pesos 10 maravedis went in

the Almiranta under Pedro de Echeverz.

The 34,915 pesos 10 maravedis represents one third the value of

the French fragata and its cargo captured by Echeverz, which

belongs to the Royal Treasury (apparently the crown gets only one

third of the prize ships, not the whole amount, and probably

Echeverz was awarded the rest).

This French fragata was captured by Echeverz, according to his

(Of course, the Spanish

considered all foreign vessels as smugglers and pirates in their

ocean Caribbean - JH).

The 309 castellanos 7 tomines 6 granos of gold dust referred to

in the above letter represents the Royal Fifth (Quinto) collected

in the town of Mompox from the mines of that district and the

district of Zimiti, and this gold dust had been sent to Cartagena

in July of 1711. The last shipment of treasure from this place

(Cartagena) was sent in the year of the Squadron of Ducasse. No

other treasure had made it out between then and that of Echeverz'

Squadron departure.

27 Aug. 1714, Cartagena:        Receipt signed by Pedro de Echeverz y

Gonzales, Capitan de mar y guerra del

navio Nuestra Senora del Rosario ...

Has received from the Royal Treasury Officials to be loaded on

his ship the sum of 15,366 pesos and 10 maravedis, one third of

the Royal Treasure shipped from Cartagena. (This total would be

the sum of the 11,639 pesos 10 maravedis plus 3,727 pesos and not

3,767 pesos which was probably a mistake).
