DATA ON LOCATION OF ECHEVERZ ALMIRANTA

1. The Almiranta was Nuestra Senora del Rosario y San Francisco

Xavier, also known by an alias as "Mars" which was probably her

name when used by the English. She was English built and was

sold by the French to Antonio de Echeverz in July of 1713. She

may have been captured by the French from the English (much like

the Hampton Court - JH). More research into this matter might

reveal more pertinent information. So, like Echeverz Capitana,

this ship is likely to have been carrying items of English

manufacture, like the sheave with the English broad arrow on it.

Her Master was Manuel Alvarez and her owner was Antonio

de Echeverz. Her tonnage given was 312 Spanish tons. Her

Captain was Pedro de Echeverz, Antonio Echeverz’ son who drowned

in the disaster. The ship's dimension are: Beam, 15 codos;

draft, 6 codos; keel, 54 codos, and overall length, 60 codos.

1. (Continued)

She drew about half the depth of water as the "C" and should have

been lost in shallower water than the "C".

She could carry 52 guns, but left Spain. carrying only

40 guns. First deck, 22 iron Spanish ten pounders; Quarterdeck,

12 iron English six pounders; Forecastle, 6 iron Spanish four

pounders.

Note: The four pounders were most likely swivel guns.

2.        Echeverz to Mirallas, Palmar de Ayz, 24 Aug 1715.

"..my Almiranta broke up in three pieces because it hit

among some rocks..”

3.        Salmon to the King, from Ayz in 27d 50m, 20 Sept 1715.

"The Capitana of the Galleons of Echeverz and the

Almiranta ran aground at five leagues distance, and all the other

ships were sunk not far away; however, all the ships were sunk on

the same island."

4.        Vatican Document, Undated.

"Of the six ships of Echeverz, 400 people drowned .....

5.        Duro, Armada Espanola, Vol VI, pp 121.

"The Almiranta of Echeverz was completely destroyed,

with 121 men lost."

Note: Duro has a Captain Manuel de Echeverz, son of Antonio de

Echeverz, as being lost on La Concepcion. Did he lose two sons

in this disaster? (Yes - JH)
