DATA ON THE LOCATION OF ECHEVERZ' FRENCH PRIZE

1.        The French frigate was named El Ciervo (sometimes spelled El

Sierbo or El Cierbo) (which translates to The Stag or Deer - JH)

and was captured by Echeverz near Porto Belo, because it was

engaged in contraband trade. The Spaniards named her Nuestra

Senora del Carmen and Salvador Castan was named her captain to

       take her back to Spain.

2.        Testimony of Captain Nicolas de Ynda, Havana, 16 Aug 1715.

"..all the ships were lost except a French nao and

three frigates of Echeverz Squadron, because they had taken

another route when the storm struck.."

3.        Casa Torres to the King, Havana, 17 Sept 1715.

"..there is no news or any hope for the 3 ships;

Grifon, the French Prize in Echeverz' Squadron, or the register

ship San Miguel.." (One could assume from this that by this date

these were the only ships missing, i.e., they knew the Concepcion

was off the Cape but not exactly where, and the rest were

accounted for off the beaches of Palmar de Ayz - JH)

4.        Salmon to the King, Palmar de Ayz, 20 September 1715.

"Until now the number of ships lost; are nine and the

two galleons missing (these would be the French Prize and the San

Miguel). There is little doubt that they sank on the high seas,

and this was proven because fragments of a ship or ships were

found on the north coast of St Augustine ..”

5.        Casa Torres to Viceroy of Mexico, Havana, 12 Oct 1715.

"We have no news of 3 other ships: Grifon, a French

frigate which Echeverz had taken as a Prize ship, and the San

Miguel. According to the Pilots and other experienced people,

judging by their positions when the hurricane struck, it is

believed that they were swallowed up by the sea and are totally

lost..”

6.        Duro, Armada Espanola, Vol VI, pp 121.

"La Francesa of Echeverz' Squadron sank with everything

on board."

7.        Like the San Miguel, there's a good possibility that she was

the ship that wrecked north of St Augustine.
