DATA ON LOCATION OF SMALL FRIGATE OF UBILLA

1. 6 Aug 1716 - On this day Salmon gave a license for Padre

Francisco de Leon y Cabrera, chaplain of the patache N. S. de

Regala to go to St Augustin and appeal for them to send aid. (See

#3 of Ubilla's Patache Data list). The Padre arrived there on the

12th and stated that the captain of this patache was named Don

Fernando Ignacio Barriga.

He gave no details about the loss of his ship, but it is fairly

certain that it was Ubilla's small patache and that it was lost

closer to that of Salmon’s Almiranta than to Lima's Urca (Why? -

JH). Ubilla would probably have kept this small frigate fairly

close to his own Capitana, to use as an Advise boat and also because

it was his property and he would want to keep an eye on it.

(Possibly so, but during the height of the storm all bets were

off; besides, a small frigate would have displayed markedly

different storm drift characteristics than a heavily laden Navio

of the 1ine-JH).

2. 20 Sept 1715 - Salmon to the King.

"The number of ships lost are nine and the two galleons

missing (Echeverz).. there is little doubt that they sunk on the

high seas and this was proven because fragments of a ship or

ships were found on the north of San Agustin.." Note, In this

case "the two galleons" does not mean the class of ship, but

instead means two ships of Echeverz Squadron, as his Squadron was

also called "The Galleons". The ship or ships wrecked north of

St Augustine does not necessarily have to be from the 1715

convoy, even though the Governor of Virginia states that silver

came ashore. It or they could be English ships or of another

nationality carrying Spanish coins. What is sure here is that

Ubilla's small frigate was known to be lost.

3. 12 Oct 1715 - Havana, Gov of Cuba to Viceroy of Mexico.

"… with respect to the Refuerzo, Patache and another

frigate which Ubilla bought in Havana .. were also lost and a

portion of the people off these ships were drowned .."

4. 14 Nov 1715 - San Sebastian, Spain - Prince of Campo Florida

to the Marques de Grimaldo.

Mentions he received the following news from way of

France which arrives there from Havana. This was probably the

French ship Francisco which left Havana on September 19th.

"As for the Fragatilla (small Frigate) that Ubilla

bought in Havana, they know nothing and believe everyone aboard

her perished .."

NOTE This means that as of Sept 19th they have not

been notified in Havana about this frigate, possibly overlooked

by Salmon or Armenta or not considered important enough news to

pass on to Havana.

5. Duro - “In the second patache 12 men drowned.”

6. Vatican Doc.: "The small frigate of General Ubilla was lost

with it's cargo .."

7. 29 Nov 1715 - Viceroy of Mexico to the King.

"He also believed that they had salvaged the wreck of

Ubilla's Patache ..." This could mean either Soto Sanchez patache

or Ubilla's small frigate.
